The Kālakācāryakathā is a very well-known collection of tales about the holy man Kālaka.
This painting depicts the battle when Kālaka (in the white-spotted robe at the foot of the painting) rescues his sister, the nun Sarasvatī, from her kidnapper King Gardabhilla of Ujjayinī. Kālaka is aided by the Sāhis, who shoot arrows into the mouth of the she-ass that gives Gardabhilla his magical powers. When she cannot bray, he loses his powers.
